Pathway to Academic and Career Excellence

Subject Description
 This course is designed to help build/improve upon a students? academic skills such as time
management, listening, notetaking, and conflict management. These transferrable skills will be
beneficial to the student entering other academic programs, the workforce and/or life in general.
 
Students will investigate the wide variety of career opportunites in the field of Health Sciences,
as well as thoroughly research their chosen career path.

Upon completion of this course, students will have developed a reflective and informed personal
career portfolio.

Credit Status
SCI101 is not a Seneca College credit course.  However, this course is an academic requirement for successful completion of the Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas & Degree Program.

Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

1. Apply time management and goal setting skills to achieve a healthy academic/life/work
balance.
2. Apply individual learning styles to reading, studying, note taking, test preparation and test
taking.
3. Practice the skills of effective communication and conflict resolution in a group setting.
4. Demonstrate information competency by using appropriate research techniques and
technologies, including the requirements for ethical research.
5. Define and recognize plagiarism and academic integrity and utilize appropriate citation
tools and resources to ensure compliance with appropriate College Policies.
6. Investigate the educational requirements and employment trends in the health sciences.
7. Develop a personal career plan & digital portfolio for their chosen field of health science

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.

Prerequisite(s)
Successful admittance to the Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas & Degree Program.

Mode of Instruction
The class will meet for three periods once a week.  Each class will consist of a lecturette with collaborative exercises. Weekly readings, assignments and exercises, solo and/or group presentations, class discussions, and consultations with the professor regarding progress will be addressed.
 
Tutoring support is available in the Learning Centre at King Campus.
