Advanced Administration of Open Systems
Subject Description
This subject teaches how to install and configure various open-source servers including Unix/Linux server, Network File System Server (NFS), Network Information System Server (NIS), Simple Mail Transfer Protocol Server (SMTP), Domain Name System Server (DNS), Post Office Protocol Mail Box Server (POP3), Internet Mail Access Protocol Mail Box Server (IMAP), Dynamic Host Control Protocol Server (DHCP), and Lightweight Directory Access Protocol Server (LDAP). Practical knowledge and understanding in open network server administration will be developed. Further students will learn the concepts of authentication, encryption, and routing under the TCP/IP networking environment.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:
- Configure the operating system on a device to allow it to perform routing functions on a network.
- Install software to provide end-users with access to commonly used networking services.
- Configure various client/server software packages to provide file-sharing and interoperability between various platforms.
- Diagnose malfunctions with computers and the network to ensure the maximum availability of network services.
- Implement data/device recovery policies to ensure minimal network downtime and data loss.
- Configure authentication and logging services to ensure secure access to a network and provide network monitoring.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.
Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
