EAC416 - Creative Writing Project: Prose Workshop

School of English and Liberal Studies (Seneca@York), Winter - 2013

Subject Title Creative Writing Project: Prose Workshop

Subject Description EAC 416 is your chance to tap your creative potential! It has been said that the most rewarding of all creative endeavours is the writing of a short story, and it is not difficult to understand why. In relatively few pages, the writer must combine the essential ingredients of real life: plot, character, drama, setting, atmosphere. When complete, the best tales convey a true sense of life's proportions, and are meaningful to all kinds of readers. This course will provide access to the tools one needs to write creatively. It will encourage each writer to work his or her ideas through on the page until that "complete" and "meaningful" product is achieved. Not a traditional classroom, the workshop relies on student involvement in the creative process so that all might benefit. For some, the course goes further. Each year, the best stories that emerge from the process are published in book form. To date, ten volumes (including some 170 stories) have been printed. Sold in bookstores, used in other college writing courses, and housed permanently in Canada's National library in Ottawa--they are lasting records of individual achievement. Although no student is obliged to "go the distance" inclusion in the book requires, the benefits to those who do are enormous. Not the least of them is the obvious fact that all who are published have clearly demonstrated superior communication skills, a most valuable ability in today's world.
