Winter 2020 Parking

Parking Changes

Parking improvements for the 2019-20 academic year include new online parking pass payment options and licence-plate-recognition technology to eliminate parking lot wait times.

Newnham Campus is using licence-plate-recognition software for lots 4, 5, 6 and 7. All students and employees who drive to Seneca, regardless which campus, must sign up for the new parking system

Frequently Asked Questions

Parking Shortage

Due to construction delays beyond our control, there will be a shortage of parking spots at Newnham. We apologize for the inconvenience this situation may cause and appreciate that everyone will do their best to maintain a positive environment.

The Newnham parking expansion construction was completed in fall 2019, creating about 300 new parking spots. Construction for a new parking structure has begun.

We will continue to provide updates as they become available.

We are doing everything we can to help alleviate the parking congestion by securing overflow parking lots in the surrounding area. To give students the best possible start to the semester, we are encouraging employees to explore alternative options throughout this semester — including signing up for overflow spaces at The Shops on Steeles (at Highway 404) and Markham Campus. Parking in these lots will be free for Newnham Campus employees. Shuttle buses will run every 20 minutes between 7:15 a.m. and 7:15 p.m. to Newnham Campus from The Shops on Steeles. The Seneca shuttle will be available based on its regular schedule from Markham Campus.

If you can’t find a parking spot when you arrive on campus, one of our parking ambassadors will direct you to one of these overflow parking lots.

Other options of commuting to campus include:

  • rideshare (use Seneca Rideshare or download the "Seneca Rideshare" app from the Google Play or iTunes)
  • carpool (register your carpool with the OneCard Office to be eligible to use designated carpool spaces, available on a first come first served basis, and will grow as more users register for the carpool program)

When you are using a mode of sustainable transportation (walking, biking, public transit, carpooling), you are eligible for the emergency ride home program.

  • The Shops on Steeles (404/Steeles)
  • Markham Campus

Note: shuttle schedule listed above is approximate and may change pending traffic.

To use Markham Campus or The Shops on Steeles as an overflow lot, you need to sign up in advance. But if you are directed by a parking ambassador to park at The Shops on Steeles, then you do not need to sign up

Please visit our parking web app and select order permit.

In order to migrate your existing payroll deduction plan over to the new system, we need to take you through a few steps.

Before you begin, make sure you have your licence plate number(s) handy:

  1. Go to our parking web app
  2. Login with your My.Seneca email and password
  3. Click "Order Permits"
  4. Choose "Employee Payroll Parking"
  5. Add your vehicle information (if you have more than one vehicle, add any vehicles you may want to drive to Seneca, even occasionally)
  6. Agree to terms of service and add permit to cart
  7. Click "Checkout"

This will allow you to park anywhere you've parked before: any gated lot at King, Markham or Newnham, and any of the non-gated lots at Newnham other than the "Short Term" parking areas.

Drivers at Newnham will notice that most of the parking lots no longer have gates attached, as part of our move to a licence-plate-recognition system. This will reduce wait times and improve safety on campus. The system is configured to allow you to register multiple vehicles, for days when you may take a different car.

If you have any questions or you experience any difficulty during the sign-up process, please contact parking@senecacollege.ca and we will be happy to assist you.

No. If you sign up for free off-site parking, you should not park on campus for the fall semester. We are experiencing a parking shortage and we would like to offer available spaces to students. If you continue to park on campus while being signed up for off-site parking, you will be ticketed.

If you sign up for free off-site parking and had your payroll deduction removed, you will not be able to use your OneCard to park at other campus lots.

Parking Changes at Newnham

The first change you will notice is that the gates in lots 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 will be lifted. This will reduce the time you need to wait to get into or out of the parking lots. It will be most notable at busy times when lineups to exit the parking lots will become much shorter.

Please note, you will still need to pay for parking even though these lots no longer have gates.

To facilitate this change, Seneca Parking is using a new licence-plate-recognition system for enforcement. If you have an active semester pass or are enrolled in payroll deduction, you can pull in without tapping your card, park your car and walk into the building without any further action.

Occasional parkers will be able to pay using a mobile payment system called Honk (Zone 3800).

Departments at Newnham that currently purchase tickets to pay for guest parking will have a new tool: the ability to email a parking pass to a guest.

In keeping with Seneca’s cashless initiative, cash will no longer be accepted at any of Newnham’s pay stations. However, cash and debit payments are still accepted at the OneCard Office.

If you currently pay for parking through payroll deduction or with a semester pass, please expect an email from Seneca Parking to sign up for the new system.

If you’re an occasional parker who currently uses a Value Pass, you’ll be able to pay using a mobile payment system called Honk (Zone 3800).

Yes, all employees who drive to Seneca’s Newnham Campus must sign up on the new system.

We understand this is a transition period and it may take some time to get used to the new licence-plate-recognition system changes. To facilitate this change, if you park in lots 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 without a valid pass or payment through Honk (Zone 3800), parking enforcement officers will issue a warning ticket with information about the parking changes.

Upon repeated offence, a City of Toronto parking ticket will be issued.
