RESCATE ANIMAL – Seneca Veterinary Internship in Ecuador

The Ecuadorian Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Universidad de Especialidades Espíritu Santo (UEES) and Fundacion Rescate Animal Ecuador (FRAE) is pleased to welcome a Seneca student from Veterinary Technician (VTE) to Guayaquil, Ecuador for an internship in Summer 2020.

FRAE has been in operation since 2012. It is a non-profit organization with the objective of fighting for the welfare of animals and to encourage an environment of tolerance and respect for all living creatures. FRAE has a primary care veterinary clinic named COLA that offers high-quality, low-cost veterinary services to widen health care access to underserved areas of the city and animal rescuers.


When Can I Go?

  • Placements are for 4-6 weeks between April – June 2020
  • Specific dates are confirmed based on interns availability


Who Can Go?

  • Veterinary Technician (VTE) students


What Will I be Doing?

  • The intern will assist the Veterinarian in his everyday activities at COLA and help other members of the team when needed. Interns will work to:
    • Assist with veterinarian consultations
    • Weigh the animals prior to medical check-up
    • Take blood samples
    • Take notes of animals' symptoms and medical history
    • Assist the veterinarian in surgical sterilization (ovariohysterectomy and orchiectomy)
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Operating knowledge in internal medicine of canines and felines
    • Basic knowledge and skills in patient handling, and interacting with customers
    • Predisposition to high-volume work in a primary care setting.
    • Desire to work in challenging circumstances and to learn different methods of providing care


What Will it Cost?

  • Students will be registered in VPL 400 for the duration of their internship
  • Students can expect to pay ~$500 USD/month for accommodation


Other Important Information?

  • The Ecuadorian Chamber of Commerce will assist students with on-site logistics such as accommodation, airport pick-up, and ground transportation to and from their internship
  • UEES will provide additional oversight and support to the students during their internship placements
