Your Career

Our three-semester Pre-service Firefighter program is designed to give you the confidence and skills needed to pursue an exciting firefighting career.

Many colleges now provide NFPA certifications, so what makes Seneca's program different? We believe there is much more to the hiring process than just NFPA certifications and Seneca delivers a program that will ensure that you are fully prepared to enter the workplace. In addition to receiving NFPA certifications, you will participate in comprehensive fitness classes*, mock written and practical employment exams, and attend individual interview sessions that are recorded and critiqued in order for you to be familiar with the hiring techniques currently used by fire services. Seneca's medical training is second to none, with experienced instructors teaching the Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder* (EMR) program.

An optional DZ license* course is offered to ensure that graduating students have all the qualifications necessary to immediately start the fire services application process. We are very proud of the Seneca College Pre-Service program and we look forward helping you realize your goal of becoming a firefighter.

*EMR certification, DZ license, and a fitness certificate are required by many fire services as part of the application process.

Testimonials

I graduated from Seneca's Pre-Service Firefighter Program in 2013and aside from the obvious - learning the basic skills, knowledge and techniques in preparation for my firefighting career, Seneca provided me with much more: job application guidance, resources and opportunities for additional job certifications, instructors with current experience in the field, and administration and staff who cared about helping me every step of the way until I got hired. I was able to start my career with confidence and transition smoothly through recruitment and ranking classes thanks to the foundation that I received at Seneca.

Andrea Bondi, Firefighter - Markham Fire and Emergency Services and Seneca Graduate

Seneca College has the most relevant and up-to-date training and equipment, and they have staff who prepare you with the knowledge you need to not only get the job but be successful in your career. The education and advice I received at Seneca ensured that I was ready for all aspects of the hiring process and allowed me to excel in recruit class and beyond.

Andrew Boyce, Firefighter - Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services and Seneca Graduate

I took the Seneca program because it has a reputation for producing solid recruit firefighters. As a student, I received focused training from instructors who were all professional firefighters, with real experience. Seneca prepared me well for the wide variety of tasks that we perform: medical response, hazmat, fire suppression, prevention and public education. The program was absolutely key to my success.

Benedict Lopes, Firefighter - Barrie Fire and Emergency Services and Seneca Graduate
