The new generation: Seneca graduates showcase their designs at McMichael Canadian Art Collection

Designs from six graduates from the class of 2012 selected by renowned gallery for display

Toronto, May 15, 2012 – Seneca Fashion Arts graduates will have designs from their final year collections displayed in the Fashion Arts: The New Generation exhibition at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection from May 15 to 22.

“The gallery asked for submissions from Seneca’s graduating Fashion Arts class for consideration to create an exciting exhibit to complement the McMichael’s feature exhibition this season, Fashionality: Dress and Identity in Contemporary Canadian Art,” said Dale Peers, co-ordinator of Seneca’s Fashion Arts program. “We are so proud that six of our graduates will have their designs viewed alongside some of the most influential art in the country.”

McMichael’s Fashionality explores the interplay between clothing, identity and culture in the work of 23 active Canadian artists, and runs until September 3, 2012.

The McMichael Canadian Art Collection is a major public art gallery devoted solely to collecting Canadian art. The gallery offers visitors the unique opportunity to enjoy Canadian landscape paintings in the woodland setting that inspired them, amongst other diverse, creative, and thought-provoking exhibitions.

“We are delighted the work of our graduating students has been recognized in this way and will be showcased in an exhibition that reflects the current trends and diversity in fashion design,” said David Agnew, Seneca President. “It is an acknowledgement of their skills and talents and a great beginning to their fashion careers.”

Seneca’s Fashion Arts program is a three-year advanced diploma program. Students learn how to take their vision of fashion design from their sketchbooks to the runway through the study of design, textiles, pattern-making, clothing construction, knitwear, history of fashion, computer aided design programs, grading and production methods. Before graduation they put their skills to the test through volunteering, internships and participating in local, national and international competitions.

With campuses across the Greater Toronto Area, Seneca offers degrees, diplomas and graduate certificates renowned for their quality and respected by employers. Combining the highest academic standards with practical, hands-on learning, expert teaching faculty and the latest technology ensures Seneca graduates are career-ready.
