Why did you decide to study the Liberal Arts University Transfer diploma program at Seneca Polytechnic?

I decided to study it at Seneca as it's known for providing students with the opportunity to pursue higher education like university, while also providing the necessary and pivotal skills needed to advance one in their career and find their passion if they are unsure about their future career choices. This was the best option for me.

How would you describe your experience at Seneca?

My experience was outstanding. It left an indelible mark on me that I will carry into my future studies, legal career and all areas of my life. Seneca gave me the essential skills and requirements to further my education and career. My professors were highly attentive, empathetic and provided me with so much support. And the school’s environment was remarkable. Students have access to everything from computer and research labs to academic advising. In addition, there’s personal counselling, accessible learning services and many student groups.

What made you decide to pursue the Paralegal (Accelerated) diploma after completing the transfer program at Seneca?

I have always had a strong inclination and an affinity towards law, social justice and advocating for human rights. Still, it wasn't until I completed the liberal arts program that I found my passion and spark to accelerate my education and pursue my career in law. And that’s why I once again became a student at Seneca and pursued the paralegal diploma.

What were some of your proudest accomplishments during your studies at Seneca?

Some of my proudest moments during my studies were receiving multiple awards in the paralegal program  . I obtained a P1 (paralegal) license with the Law Society of Ontario and I was appointed as a notary public, so I can witness oaths in the province. In addition, I was the co-founder of an inclusive club for students with autism and ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) during my studies.

How did the paralegal diploma prepare you for your Human Rights & Equity Studies degree program at York University?

The paralegal program was excellent in the sense that it improved my reading, writing and research abilities and provided excellent organizational and time management skills that prepared me for York University. My experience at Seneca taught me how to advocate for the rights of others and prepared me for my career as a lawyer. The program also helped me refine the skills needed for my honours degree at York, where I graduated as a member of the dean's honour roll and magna cum laude.

What was the transition like going from a diploma to a degree? And how was it different?

Upon successfully completing two diplomas, the transition was simple and familiar. Seneca prepared me with the necessary skills and knowledge for my honour’s degree, which involved majoring in a particular discipline and more research.

What advantage do you see in having both a diploma and degree?

Completing college first is beneficial as it prepares you for a degree, especially if you're a mature student or have been out of school for an extended period. It helps you get ready for the job market and increases access to opportunities. The advantages to having both are that you get a broader education and more experience.

Advice

What advice would you give someone who is considering going on to a degree?

Take advantage of any opportunities you have when obtaining a degree and never let anyone or anything convince you to do otherwise. Know that you can work hard and never give up on your goal. Maintaining a positive mindset and a healthy school environment is pivotal to succeed in your degree, while always keeping yourself on track and organized.

Do you have any tips for how to balance work, school and life?

To stay focused and motivated in balancing out your work, school and personal life, you must stay organized and build a schedule you can commit yourself to daily. You can avoid distractions with efficient organizational and time management skills. Remember your end goal and the fantastic opportunities you have been given to reach it.

Current Life

What are you up to now?

I am a licensed paralegal and notary public in Ontario, specializing in civil litigation law. I graduated from York University in October 2023 and then wrote the LSAT. I’m still hearing from law schools and contemplating which one I want to go to in September.

What are your plans for the future?

I plan to pursue my Juris Doctor in Ontario. I am excited about this since I can explore my passion for law and legal studies further and advocate for the rights of others. All of this wouldn't have been possible without first being a student at Seneca!
