I chose Seneca because the courses that were offered aligned with my interests in the field. It was an easy transition and I had some of the same professors in my diploma and degree programs. 

It was extremely easy to apply for the degree program. The application was simple and straightforward. There was a transfer document that I filled out and submitted. There is also support available from academic advisers and the Academic Pathways team.

Doing a research project helped me to build connections and confidence. My project was about using behavioural skills training to teach a data collection method called ‘planned activity check.’ I worked with one other classmate and our participants were students in the Behaviour Sciences program. Having that experience gave me the confidence to consider a research-based PhD in the future.

I chose to pursue the Master of Professional Education (MPEd) with a specialization in Applied Behaviour Analysis at Western University. It’s an online program that allows me to work full time while attending school.

Yes, the Honours Bachelor of Behavioural Psychology degree program prepared me for learning more in-depth concepts in my master’s. When I started my graduate program, I was already ahead in some topics because of the course work at Seneca. For example, my basic applied behaviour analysis, concepts and principles course was essentially a review of everything I learned in my undergraduate program. It was so nice to have that foundational knowledge. 

I received the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) with the Behaviour Analyst Certification Board. With this certification, I can supervise and design the implementation of applied behaviour analysis strategies for clients of all types. There are more opportunities, even beyond the field of autism when you become certified. 

Having a BCBA puts you near the top of the field in the behaviour analysis arena. 

Yes, there are so many opportunities when you get a master’s degree. Without a master’s, getting a BCBA would not be possible and that certification opens so many more doors. Having the diploma, the degree, and a master’s degree presents a unique learning experience to slowly grow in the academic world. I valued the introductory information in the diploma program as it provided great groundwork to build on moving forward. 

I plan to continue my education. I am considering a PhD that involves clinical psychology, school psychology and ABA.

For now, I am gaining experience as a BCBA. I currently work as a behaviour analyst and train group-home staff to use ABA strategies for clients with high needs.

I knew I enjoyed working with kids who had developmental disabilities and I wanted a job with room for growth. With more education, my options expanded. As my skills grow in the field, my opportunities will also grow. 

When starting a diploma program, know that this is not where it ends. Two years in a diploma program is a small step toward bigger educational goals. Remember, there is the option to continue with Seneca and further your education with some of the same classmates and staff. It is a smooth transition.
