Participants create bouquets of flowers to donate to the Michael Garron Hospital

Hands-on learning workshop brings spring blooms to hospital rooms

The Faculty of Continuing Education at Seneca Polytechnic recently held a remarkable workshop that not only sharpened participants' skills, but also made a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Led by Kelly Wason-Clark, an esteemed instructor from the Professional Floral Design program, the event emphasized the importance of hands-on learning while spreading happiness through floral arrangements.

Kelly Wason-Clark, a veteran member of the floral industry and a dedicated faculty member at Seneca  since 2005, brings a wealth of experience in managing flower shops, collaborating with renowned floral designers worldwide and organizing spectacular floral shows. She firmly believes in the power of giving back and recognizes the significance of flowers and gardening for one's mental and physical well-being.

The workshop revolved around Seneca's Professional Floral Design program, created to equip students with the necessary knowledge and professionalism for a successful career in retail floristry. Ranging from basic to advanced levels, the curriculum covers essential topics such as design principles, colour theory, botany, plant care, sketching and sales and management techniques.

However, the highlight of the event went beyond skill-building. Participants had the opportunity to apply their newfound expertise in a meaningful way. The flower arrangements crafted during the workshop were generously donated to the Michael Garron Hospital in East York, specifically intended for patients in palliative care. These thoughtfully crafted floral gifts not only added a touch of nature's beauty to hospital rooms, but also provided solace and moments of joy to individuals going through challenging times.

Receiving flowers can have a profoundly uplifting effect on patients in palliative care. The vibrant colours and delicate fragrances can create a positive impact on their overall well-being. The workshop served as a heartwarming gesture to welcome the arrival of the warmer seasons while reminding everyone of the incredible power of compassion and generosity.

Seneca's commitment to giving back and promoting education is evident in workshops like these. By combining hands-on learning with a heartfelt purpose, Seneca 's workshop not only enriched the participants' abilities but also brought warmth and brightness to the lives of patients in need. Such initiatives remind us of the incredible impact we can have when we share our skills and extend kindness to those who need it most.
