Strong community interest in diversifying Ontario Fire Service

Seneca Polytechnic sells out first-ever Fire Service Career Camp

Seneca Polytechnic hosted its inaugural Fire Service Career Camp on Aug. 25, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to diversity and equity in the Ontario Fire Service. This community outreach event aimed to showcase the Seneca Fire Protection programs to underrepresented individuals in the field.

The event welcomed 30 students from grades 10-12 s from various community organizations and schools across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). These students were given a unique opportunity to explore the world of firefighting, fire investigation, fire dynamics and fire safety through engaging and hands-on workstations, meticulously designed by dedicated Firefighter, Pre-Service Education and Training (FFP) student volunteers.

“Experiential learning experiences are at the heart of everything we do here at Seneca,” says Kris Gillis, Professor and Program Co-ordinator in the Pre-Service Firefighter and Fire Service Training Programs.

The overwhelming response to the event was evident as it sold out within just 24 hours, demonstrating the strong interest and enthusiasm from the community. The success of the Fire Service Career Camp was a collaborative effort, led by five passionate FFP student volunteers, with unwavering support from Seneca Events and esteemed faculty members.

This event not only showcased Seneca’s commitment to fostering a more inclusive and diverse Ontario Fire Service, but also provided aspiring, young minds with invaluable insights and experiences that will undoubtedly shape their future careers. Seneca looks forward to continuing its mission to inspire and educate the next generation of firefighting professionals, while ensuring a brighter and more inclusive future for all.
