This course will provide students with a basic overview of Canadian politics, government and current issues. It will include brief introductions to:

  • the Canadian constitutional framework;
  • contemporary Canadian governmental structures;
  • the relationship between the justice system and parliament;
  • the role of political parties and interest groups in defining issues;
  • the role of the mass media in shaping public opinion;
  • the role of public opinion in influencing government;
  • the role of the supreme court;
  • the role of interest groups
  • flaws in the political system
  • current issues such as globalization, taxes, and balancing the budget.
