Special Effects Makeup Artistry

Seneca College Certificate

 

Overview

This program has been designed to meet the standards of the professional cosmetics and entertainment industry. Students learn through demonstration and hands-on instruction the challenging art of glamour makeup and makeup application for stage, television and film. Special effects makeup as well as production work and script analysis are included.

Toronto is recognized as a film/television centre with a growing number of people employed in production. Program graduates are in high demand as makeup artists representing commercial cosmetics companies. Challenging career options include retail cosmetic demonstration, makeup application for fashion shows, bridal and glamour photography, television, film and theatre.

This advanced program covers the theory, art, and skills of makeup application for glamour, theatre, motion pictures and television. Students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to work in these fields, and an awareness of the business essentials that are crucial for success.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have a good command of the English language in order to be successful in this program.

Prerequisites

It is your responsibility to ensure that program requirements and course prerequisites as outlined are met. Prerequisites are included for your academic protection. Knowledge of the prerequisite material is assumed by your instructor and instruction will proceed accordingly. Students lacking prerequisites not only jeopardize their own ability to succeed but present unnecessary interruption. If you lack appropriate prerequisites (or Transfer Credit for the prerequisite course) you may be asked to withdraw or transfer to a more appropriate course with the risk of academic/financial penalty.

Makeup Basics

In this 84 hour course, students will study the basics of special effects makeup and learn to apply glamour makeup for day and evening. An understanding of facial structure, colour theory, as well as the tools, materials and techniques for skillful application are studied and put into practice.

COS711
Hairstyling for Professional Makeup Artists
Availability
 

Students learn the procedures of basic hairstyling. From the simple art of a blowout, to the proper technique of an elegant up-do style. A variety of tools will be mandatory to perform in this class. Students will be required to bring a live model for one of the assignments.
Students are required to have all these tools and supplies for the first class. Mannequin head with hair a minimum of 16 inches in length with stand clamp for table mount, blow dryer with nozzle, hot rollers, 1 inch or 1 1/4" barrel curling iron, 3 sizes of round brushes, small, medium and large, teasing brush, flat paddle brush, tail comb, barbering comb, bobby pins, do all clips, hair elastics, water spray bottle, medium to light hold hairspray.

Fashion Makeup

This course introduces students to specialty makeup application techniques for fashion and bridal photography. Natural to high fashion looks, runway and historical makeup are included. Professional photo sessions assist students to develop a portfolio of their work.

COS718
Air Brush Makeup Artistry

Prerequisite(s):

COS710 and COS715

Airbrush is the most advanced method of applying makeup. Using airbrushing techniques, students learn to create a variety of looks from natural to glamour and fantasy. Topics include safety, equipment, products, making and using stencils and shields, designs for the face and body and creating temporary tattoos.

Character Makeup

Prerequisite(s):

COS710 and COS715

Makeup application for the theatre requires a knowledge of the proper use of colours and the particular effects that lighting has on colour. Students learn to design makeup for various distance ranges in production work. Students must purchase some supplies.

Theatre Makeup

This course is designed to allow the student to conduct character studies and to skillfully create and convey characters through the use of makeup. Topics include latex aging, facial hair and bald caps.

COS750
Film and TV Makeup

Prerequisite(s):

COS710, COS715, COS720 and COS730

This course qualifies students to apply make-up professionally for film or television productions. Students learn to apply eyebrow covers, facial lifts, pates, and to apply make-up for the television studio and film. Period make-up, aging for television techniques and casualty simulation are included.

COS760
Production Work and Script Analysis

Prerequisite(s):

COS750

Knowing how to read a script is necessary in organizing make-up needs, assessing the time required for a film or television series, preparing a budget, and scheduling make-up call times. Human relations requirements for success in dealing with an employer and the performing artists are studied, as well as the business practices essential for a career as a freelance make-up artist.

Required Supplies

Students are required to purchase supplies for each course. A supply list will be distributed during the first class.

Graduation/Convocation

When you meet all program requirements and become eligible for a certificate, diploma, or degree, you must inform the Registrar by completing a Graduation Application form and paying the graduation and alumni fee. Certificates, diplomas, and applied degrees are issued twice a year in the Fall (October), Spring (June) and Winter (February).

Minimum Performance for Graduation

A student will be eligible to graduate from a certificate, diploma, advanced diploma or graduate certificate program if they have achieved a minimum graduating GPA of 2.0.

A student will be eligible to graduate from a degree program if they have achieved a minimum graduating GPA of 2.5, which includes a minimum GPA of 2.5 in the courses in their main field of study and a minimum GPA of 2.0 in breadth courses.

Faculty Profiles

Deborah Krymuza
Deborah has worked in the industry as a professional makeup artist for over 28 years with experience in film, theatre, fashion, television and personal makeup.

In addition to her industry experience, Deborah has held positions as a product manager for a privately owned cosmetic company and as a technician for Sheridan College's Cosmetic Techniques and Management program. She has also taught classes at a variety of private Canadian institutions and has held private tutoring sessions for small groups.

Since 1997, Deborah has been a member of Seneca Part-time Studies' teaching faculty. She is also a shop coordinator at a Toronto-based special effects company.

Currently, Deborah teaches COS710 - Make-up Basics or COS715 - Fashion Make-up.

 

Jane Byrne Stevenson
Jane has been a professional makeup artist for over 40 years. Previously, Jane has managed the makeup and wig department for Malabar Ltd. Costume Company, worked on several productions for The Canadian Opera Company, and served as the makeup supervisor for the Toronto production of Cats.

As a Talent Bank member for Theatre Ontario, Jane conducted numerous workshops for community theatres all across Ontario. She has been a makeup instructor for over 35 years at Seneca College and has taught at several other local colleges and universities. Some of her credits include Friday the Thirteenth, War of the Worlds, Twilight Zone, Kung Fu: The Legend Continues, History Bites, as well as various commercials and videos. In addition to being an instructor at Seneca College, Jane continues to work at the CBC as a staff artist. Jane is also a retired member of NABET and the author of Make-a-Face.

 

Rita Stapleton
Rita Stapleton has been a professional makeup artist for over 30 years, working primarily in the film and television industry. Known for her innovation, Rita has mastered the intricate techniques of airbrush makeup application and has shared her knowledge on makeup artistry as a part-time instructor at Seneca College for 13 years. She has also taught at television workshops, Nabet 700, and conducts private training.

Rita enjoys sharing her skills and strives to ensure quality and professionalism in the craft. She believes the creative mind has no limits and inspiring others makes her career as a makeup artist even more rewarding.

Currently, Rita teaches COS718 - Air Brush Make-up Artistry.

 

Robert Novello
Robert Novello is the owner and Artistic Director at Hippie Hair Concepts. A brand, style and image that has been evolving since 1996. Throughout a creative 30+ year career, Robert has worked with some of the beauty industry's best. With a passion for knowledge and a determination to be on top of his profession, hairstyling took him to the runways of Toronto, Milan and Paris fashion week. With many different facets of the beauty industry under his belt, Robert has also styled hair for many of Toronto's photographers' editorial fashion shoots. Robert has also graced the stage himself, demonstrating and presenting for some of the beauty industry's best companies.

Today, Robert along with his wife, Laura, operate and run Hippie Hair Concepts. With education always being a top priority of Robert's career, he has decided to give back to the industry by bringing his years of knowledge into the classroom and becoming an educator himself.

Currently, Robert teaches COS711 - Hairstyling for Professional Make-up Artists.
