What is the difference between Graduation and Convocation?

Graduation is the term used to acknowledge that you have met your requirements and you have been approved to graduate from the program. Convocation refers to the ceremony where your credential will be conferred.

I'm ready to graduate. What's next?

Once you are enrolled in your final program requirements, please submit a Graduation Application form.

If you have completed your program requirements and you do not wish to be considered for graduation, then please opt-out of graduation on the Student Centre. The last day to opt-out is the last day of the term.

When are convocation ceremonies held?

Students who complete their program in December or April will be included in the Spring Ceremonies held in June.

Students who complete their program in August will be included in the Fall Ceremonies held in October.

What time should I arrive?

Please arrive at the Newnham Campus one hour before your ceremony time (for Spring or Fall) to complete your convocation sign-in and gowning.

Guests: Doors will open one hour prior to the start of the ceremony. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Guests with special needs will have priority seating.

Are there tickets for guests?

Guest tickets are not issued, though you will still need to reserve your number of guests (maximum of 3). Instructions will be included in Your Convocation Invitation email. Please note that guests under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

How long does the ceremony last?

Your ceremony will last approximately two hours, followed by a one-hour reception.

How should I dress for the ceremony?

The dress code for the ceremony is Business Formal.

Is parking free?

Yes. On the day of your convocation ceremony you and your guests can enjoy complimentary parking.

I’m not attending my ceremony. How do I get my credential?

Pick-up in Person: Your credential will be available for pick-up one week after the convocation ceremonies (Spring or Fall) at the Markham Campus Registration Office. Photo ID is required. If you require that someone else picks up your credential, please provide them with a signed authorization letter.

Please Note: An unclaimed credential will be destroyed 6 months after your convocation ceremony. At a cost, you can request a Replacement Credential.

Courier Service: Alternately, you can arrange to have your credential couriered (signature is required upon delivery). This can be done through Student Centre. Instructions will also be provided in the Your Convocation Invitation email. Please note the following courier fees apply:

  • Within Ontario: $10
  • Other provinces and territories in Canada: $30
  • Outside of Canada: $40

Credentials will be sent for delivery beginning one week after Convocation.

As a part-time student, do I have to pay alumni fees?

As a part-time student, you are required to pay the Alumni Fee if your program consists of 10 or more courses.
