Why did you choose to study at Seneca? What program did you enter?

When I was about to graduate high school, I felt unsure about what would be next for me. I didn’t feel quite ready for university, and I didn’t know what career path I wanted to follow. At the time, my brother was enrolled at Seneca and was taking Human Resources Management. I would overhear him study and I realized I understood the concepts quite well. This led to an easy decision to join the Seneca community and it ended up being the bridge I needed post-high school. I enrolled in the Business Administration – Human Resources program and completed my three-year advanced diploma between 2004 and 2007, with honours.

How would you describe your experience at Seneca?

I had a really positive experience at Seneca, and I am a proud Seneca graduate. I made a number of lifelong friends, and I was able to schedule my classes to fit my personal life. The professors were all great. They always provided one-on-one support for each student and took the time to get to know us individually. Everything I learned from Seneca was very practical and I can still apply these hands-on learnings in the workplace today.

What influenced your decision to continue your education after completing your advanced diploma?

Throughout my years at Seneca, I noticed I gained confidence as a student. I felt more certain about myself and the field I was pursuing. I knew I could do more and further my education. I proceeded with the pathway option between Seneca and Toronto Metropolitan University to further expand my HR skills. I completed the Bachelor of Commerce degree at Toronto Metropolitan University in Human Resources Management from 2007 to 2009.

What influenced you to pursue the field of human resources?

At the time, my brother was enrolled in Human Resources Management at Seneca, and I decided to follow in his footsteps. It ended up being a great fit for me as I like helping people and understood that HR representatives support employees throughout their career at a company.

How did your Seneca program prepare you for your degree program?

Seneca provided me the confidence I needed as a young student coming out of high school. It gave me a safe space to learn as well as the tools and skills necessary for the real world. During my time at Seneca, I became a better student. I developed my learning skills, which helped me transition to a university setting. Once I moved into my degree program at Toronto Metropolitan University, I knew I could excel there as well.

What are you up to now?

After I graduated from the human resources programs at Seneca and Toronto Metropolitan University, I enrolled with the Human Resources Professionals Association (HRPA) to obtain my Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) and Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designations.

My career began soon after graduating and I moved directly into the human resources field, working in both the recruitment and benefits departments. As my career grew, I began to specialize in the importance of employee engagement, and I found a career home in change management. Change management and human resources go hand-in-hand as they are about people first. As a Project Director of Change Management, I now help employees along the change journey to be successful in their roles.

From experience, do you think there is value in having a diploma and degree?

Absolutely. The skills and confidence I developed through postsecondary education have helped to propel me into my career today.

My family has always placed a great value on education and as I look back, I am grateful for their encouragement.

Any words of advice to students who are currently in the program you graduated out of at Seneca? And considering pursing further education?
