Overview

This program is designed to equip students with the skills to succeed in the growing front-line client service areas of Canada's financial services industry. The program covers the fundamental aspects of business, which entails the broad principles and practices, as well as the specific areas of business writing, contact centre operations, sales and mutual funds. Students will also complete the Canadian Investment Funds Course and have the opportunity to qualify for registration of a mutual funds license. Upon graduation, students will be prepared to begin a career in the financial services sector, including banks, insurance and investment companies.

The ability to write clearly and directly is highly prized in organizations. In order to succeed in today's information overload world, writers must be able to effectively articulate ideas quickly, clearly and concisely in proposals, emails, reports, memos, project plans and through social media. This course focuses on creating professional-quality documents for realistic business situations, with an emphasis on audience analysis, appropriateness and editing. Other topics include formal and informal outlining techniques, how to revise for wordiness, unnecessary phrases, redundancy and jargon, and e-correspondence in an "organizational" setting.

It provides students with a perspective of business firms as integrated organizations composed of a number of specialized functions.

Call Centre Operations

Equivalency: RFC 302
Call Centre Operations students are introduced to a working contact centre environment. They will understand how the call centre relates to the industry and its function within a corporate structure. Students will become proficient using call centre technology and will apply classroom theory demonstrating skills in communication, keyboarding, sales and customer service in practice situations.

Canadian Investment and Funds

This course is offered in partnership with the Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC) and delivered through Inventive Financial Sector Education (IFSE.) Students will be given an overview of mutual funds within the context of the financial services industry. They will gain the knowledge needed for their roles as a mutual funds sales representative and, through the analysis of case studies, will put their knowledge into practice. Students will learn how to evaluate clients' investment objectives and the competencies to help them choose the investment strategy and vehicles that are right for them.

A career in selling can focus on either industrial or retail sales. This course deals primarily with industrial selling using ethical and logical techniques that many successful salespeople use in their careers.

Anti-Money Laundering Administration

The international financial services community is working closely with the government and police force at all levels to contain efforts by organized crime and terrorist groups to launder money and use the financial services system as a conduit for the illicit transfer of funds from the proceeds of crime. The Canadian government has put legislative mechanisms in place and established a financial intelligence unit, FINTRAC, to monitor compliance. This course will teach students about Anti-Money Laundering management programs that are in conformance with Canadian and international regulatory requirements.

Money Laundering and Fraud

Fraud and fraudulent practices have been around forever. The advancement of electronic technology, the internet, and the tools driving these innovations has added layers of complexity available to the fraudster. The course also looks closely at these areas, as well as money laundering and potential terrorist activity. Investigative responses to these types of fraud will also be explored.

Program Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. Describe core functions of Canadian businesses in relation to local and global economies in order to make informed decisions.
  2. Use targeted writing in order to communicate in a variety of media.
  3. Use technology to build client relationships.
  4. Identify professional sales concepts, principles and strategies in order to help organizations meet objectives.
  5. Assess client risk-tolerance in order to identify suitable investment products.
  6. Adhere to ethical, legal and professional codes of conduct in the financial service industry in order to meet regulatory requirements and provide professional service.

Employment

Through extensive industry consultation, the Seneca Financial Services Essentials (FSE) Certificate Program has been designed to provide graduates with the necessary knowledge and skill to lead to employment in the financial services industry.

Professional Certification

Students who successfully complete the FSE Certificate Program may be eligible to pursue a Mutual Fund License granted by the Mutual Fund Dealers Association (MFDA); and earn a credit towards the Certified Sales Professional (CSP) designation, granted by the CPSA.

Graduation/Convocation

When you meet all program requirements and become eligible for a certificate, diploma, or degree, you must inform the Registrar by completing a Graduation Application form and paying the graduation and alumni fee. Certificates, diplomas, and applied degrees are issued twice a year in the Fall (October) and Spring (June).
