Overview

The Pharmaceutical Quality Control ROA provides students with the knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (Health Canada), FDA and International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) guidelines, applicable standard operating procedures, working knowledge of analytical instrumental techniques (HPLC, GC and Dissolution), computerized work stations software and troubleshooting techniques.  

Students perform chemical and physical analysis on a wide range of pharmaceutical products in accordance with established procedures and analytical monographs such as US pharmacopoeia and British Pharmacopoeia.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Pharmaceutical Quality Control (ROA) Program may find employment in the pharmaceutical industry in quality control laboratories.

National Occupational Classification (NOC) - Government of Canada

The  National Occupational Classification (NOC) provides a standardized language for describing the work performed by Canadians in the labor market. It gives statisticians, labor market analysts, career counselors, employers and individual job seekers a consistent way to collect data and describe and understand the nature of work.

Entry Requirements

Ontario Secondary School Diploma or University/College Preparation: Grade 12 English, Chemistry, Mathematics and Grade 11 Biology are required. Mature students with work experience are considered on that basis, but may be advised to take College preparatory Chemistry, English, Biology, and Math.

Students who hold a diploma or degree from another country and have the above credits may directly enrol into the PHC program. You do not have to show your documents or write a admission test.

Lab Assay Methods I

This laboratory-oriented course addresses techniques and methods used in pharmaceutical analysis. Pre-lab and post-lab lectures delve into the theory of separative and analytical techniques and include clarification of relevant pharmaceutical terminology. Basic HP Liquid Chromatography

This course is an introduction to the theory and practical application of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Microbiology II

Prerequisite(s):

PFT401

This laboratory and lecture course highlights microbiological tests involved in pharmaceutical plant sanitation, product contamination, antibiotics, disinfectants and microbial growth and inactivation calculations. (Lecture and Lab)

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the program, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of regulations applicable to the Pharmaceutical industry.
  • Apply analytical instrumental techniques, calibration of common laboratory equipment, and laboratory testing of raw materials and finished products.
  • Learn a variety of microbiological techniques including the cultivation, manipulation, isolation and identification of microorganisms.
  • Conduct experiments according to established Standard Operating Practices (SOP), Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and applicable federal regulations and industry standards.

Recognition of Achievement

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, please submit a Request for Recognition of Achievement Form to the Faculty of Continuing Education and Training. There is no cost for this and your Recognition of Achievement will be mailed to you.
