Overview

This graduate certificate program is delivered by a team of expert faculty members who will advance your knowledge of digital media fundamentals including social media platforms, tools, and techniques. You will learn to create content, develop campaigns, and implement social media and digital engagement strategies to help organizations achieve their objectives.

Through hands-on learning, you will learn how social media can be used in an organizational context. This program was developed in close consultation with industry leaders to ensure that you learn what is relevant, applicable across multiple disciplines and currently in demand.

Entry Requirements

  • Ontario university or college degree or college diploma or equivalent
  • Applicants with an equivalent combination of partial postsecondary and/or three to five years related work experience may be considered for admission. A relevant resumé and references must be provided
  • English proficiency for graduate certificates

Canadian citizens or permanent residents educated outside of Canada must provide a World Education Services (WES) or ICAS Canada credential evaluation.

This subject will provide students with the knowledge of how to acquire and develop long-term, profitable, customer relationships through Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems and strategies. Using a variety of techniques, which may include case analysis, guest speakers and study of best practices, students will explore CRM issues and applications, current technologies, and the potential of CRM systems. This course provides students with the knowledge to develop a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) strategy for an organization. Best practices, articles, current events, and experiential learning will be used by students to gain an understanding of how to develop, build and maintain profitable customer relationships.

Marketing Fundamentals

The purpose of this course is to provide a comprehensive and in-depth introduction to the fundamental make-up and structure of marketing. Students will come to understand that marketing is more than advertising, sales, promotions, etc. They will learn and experience that marketing is the management of all these elements (and more) as part of the marketing mix. They will work on assignments that build an understanding of how marketing helps enable organizations to reach objectives such as customer growth, customer satisfaction, sales generation, driving and growing revenue, and increasing loyalty. This course will teach students to understand how and why marketing influences us and will help students acquire the fundamental skills, principles, and strategies of the marketing discipline. The course will include, but not be limited to; segmentation, targeting, positioning, marketing plan development, the 4 P's, the 5 C's and more.

Social Media Strategies

Prerequisite(s):

SMD101 is a compulsory credit course for students in the Social Media Communication Graduate Certificate. It is a prerequisite for the remaining courses in the Social Media Communication Graduate Certificate.

This introductory course looks at the various components of using, interacting with, and creating a social media presence. This subject stresses the importance of effective textual, visual, audio, and visual communication, alongside the necessity for ethical practices that emphasize privacy and security. Assessing trends highlights how social media is always changing as is our relation to the ideologies social media helps to construct.

Search Engine Strategies

Search Engine Marketing (SEM), including Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Pay-Per-Click (PPC) is part of an integrated marketing communications strategy. This course will look at the purpose of a search engine, how SEO can help organizations improve search engine rankings, PPC tools and techniques.

Technical Skills for Social Media

This subject explores the technologies and workings behind digital communications and social media platforms. Beginning with a short history on group communication through technology, the course moves onto hands-on experience with digital, social media, marketing and analytics platforms. Following industry best practices and standardized processes, students apply their knowledge to develop marketing programs using industry recognized tools.

Content Marketing Management

You cannot read a marketing trade publication without seeing the word "content." Content is King. Content is the fuel that drives social media programs. Content is the essence and substance of brand building.

Content Marketing is a strategic approach designed to help further an organization's brand by focusing on the creation and distribution of relevant and interesting content aimed at attracting and retaining a defined audience. It's about the pull vs. the push or, in other words, content marketing is the stuff people want to see. This course will introduce students to the concepts of content marketing and equip students with the tools and abilities to create a content marketing plan.

Visual Communications

Visuals have become the most used medium by organizations to market and raise awareness for a product, cause or idea. YouTube, Pinterest and Instagram are popular sites for non-profit, public and private sector organizations. This subject will cover concept development; scripting; tagging, embedding and streaming tools; video, image and meme virality; video blogging; and use of testimonials.

Internet Market Research

Through applied learning, this subject will explore how online qualitative and quantitative data is collected, analyzed, and applied. Topics include segmentation; data collection tools like online focus groups, forum analysis, email and interactive surveys; crowdsourcing research; online research design, concept testing, and analysis. Real case studies and guest lectures will help students grasp concepts and themes on leveraging Internet Market Research.

Influence Based Marketing

Influencer marketing is quickly becoming a key pillar in the marketing mix. As consumers change their media consumption habits and the traditional media landscape continues to shrink, social influencers have risen as the new class of persuasive and credible voices, able to sway consumer opinion and drive sales for brands around the globe. This course will take a deep dive into influencer marketing, unpacking the discipline's roots, providing best in class campaign examples, and detailing the different types of influencers and the roles they can play in integrated campaigns. Students will learn how to find and vet influencers to maintain brand safety and how to create content that aligns to the consumer decision journey. At the end of the course, students will be able to measure and identify key performance indicators of success, developing their own strategic influencer marketing campaign.

Social Media Capstone
Availability
 

This capstone course will require you to combine multiple skills gained throughout the broader program and use them to create an actionable social media marketing plan on behalf of a real client assignment. In addition, the capstone course will include a look at what brands are successfully integrating social media into their brand building efforts and require active participation in assessing their effectiveness through group discussion. Digital thought leaders will make guest appearances and active engagement will be required.

Program Outcomes

This Seneca program has been validated by the Credential Validation Service as an Ontario College Credential as required by the Ministry of Colleges and Universities.

As a graduate, you will be prepared to reliably demonstrate the ability to:

  • analyze the impact of social media on communication methods and business practices.
  • explore current trends, emerging technologies and future applications of social media.
  • communicate effectively with intended audiences using social media.
  • create and use social media accounts for specific business or marketing purposes.
  • evaluate the effectiveness of a social media initiative in relation to intended goals.
  • apply social media solutions in ways that use current best practices, and adhere to ethical, legal and privacy regulations and legislation.
  • design and implement a social media project for the non-profit or private sector.

OSAP Funding Available

This program is eligible for OSAP funding.

Course load is used by OSAP to determine funding options for programs.

Course load is calculated by dividing the number of courses you are enrolled in at the same time by the total number of courses per semester. For example, in Social Media there are six courses in Semester 1 and five courses in Semester 2.

To be considered for part-time OSAP, you must have a course load between 20 to 59 per cent. If you are taking two or three courses in Social Media in a given term, you may be considered for part-time student grants and loans.

You will learn the ins-and-outs of salesforce.com's industry-leading social media marketing applications. Upon graduation, you will be eligible to write the Salesforce Marketing Cloud certification exam.
  • Hootsuite: As a student of this program, you will also be enrolled in Hootsuite academy. Upon completion of the Hootsuite Platform Training courseware, you may graduate with a Hootsuite Platform Certification.
  • Ahrefs: Upon graduation, students will be able to use Ahrefs, a digital marketing (SEO) intelligence tool, and perform various tasks such as keyword research, competitor analyses, content gap analyses, content audits, SEO technical analyses and backlink audits. Ahrefs follows new tendencies in the world of SEM and SEO so that new grads will be fully equipped with the latest updates and features to utilize in their work.
  • American Marketing Association: The American Marketing Association is the essential community for marketers and is committed to promoting the high-test standard of the professional ethical norms and values for its members (practitioners, academics, and students).
  • Canadian Marketing Association (CMA): The CMA is the voice of the marketing profession in Canada. Graduation/Convocation

When you meet all program requirements and become eligible for a certificate, diploma, or degree, you must inform the Registrar by completing a Graduation Application form and paying the graduation and alumni fee. Certificates, diplomas, and applied degrees are issued twice a year in the Fall (October), Spring (June) and Winter (February).
