Waste Reduction

Batteries

Seneca works with an external company to dispose of batteries using a method that recycles and reuses all of the components of an alkaline battery sustainably — nothing is sent to landfill. During 2021, Seneca collected close to one tonne of batteries for safe recycling.

Containers for battery collection are located in high-traffic locations at King, Markham, Newnham and Seneca @York campuses.

King Campus

  • Shipping & Receiving, Garriock Hall, GH1040
  • Computing Commons, in front of the cafeteria

Markham Campus

  • near the Security Desk, lobby

Newnham Campus

  • near the Welcome Desk, Building A
  • near the Welcome Desk, Residence

York Campus

  • Near the welcome desk
  • Shipping & Receiving, Room S1027

To avoid the possibility of a short circuit, affix masking tape to the terminal ends of lithium, button cells, six- and nine-volt, and sealed acid batteries prior to disposal.

Departments may request a two-gallon bin to collect batteries in their office by contacting Michelle Freeman. If you have a full bin, empty its contents into the large battery drum located at on the these locations:

  • Newham Campus: D1104
