Dual Credit Courses Taken

Introduction to Marketing

Seneca Program

Why are you interested in sharing your Dual Credit experience?

The program really helped me make postsecondary decisions and I would love to help others do the same. I hope sharing my experience helps show others about the program and that it was a great experience.

What did you enjoy the most about Dual Credit and your experience?

I really liked how we got the real college experience. In high school, they talk about how postsecondary is a whole different level, how it’s a lot more independent and an entirely different experience, which sounds kind of intimidating. Doing the Dual Credit program and being on a real college campus helped show it’s more calm, doable and not as intimidating as you may think.

Doing Dual Credit helped relieve some of the nerves when I started college full time, since I had a better idea what I was getting into and what to expect.

How did Dual Credit help you prepare for postsecondary?

Having a much smaller class was nice because you’re used to 30 or more in a high school class. It was easier and helped build confidence with me and other students — with the smaller class size — since it was less intimating to raise your hand and ask questions. It was fun every class and more of a group conversation, which the professor encouraged. She was very supportive of us and so nice.

I initially didn’t really know what I wanted to get into, only what I didn’t want to go into, which wasn’t too helpful, but I really liked how my Dual Credit marketing course went. This was part of the reason I decided to take a marketing course during my program at Seneca. I had a great professor and I liked being surrounded by people with the same interests as me. I’m currently in the Creative Advertising diploma program at Seneca.

Why would you recommend Dual Credit to a current high school student? What advice would you give to a student considering taking Dual Credit?

There are no negatives! You learn something, you experience something, you meet people — you’re going to get something out of it! I still talk to people who were in my Dual Credit course and we keep in contact.

When you pick your course, it’s nice to be surrounded by other people in the same position as you. When I was in high school, I was interested in marketing but none of my friends were interested in it, so it was nice to come together with other students who had similar passions, interests and feelings as me. You don’t feel as intimidated with a smaller class of people all with similar interests as you.

I understand in grades 11 and 12 with how busy their schedules are, they may be unsure if they should take a program like this. I hope anyone who is considering it does do it because it really is a step forward in your future and being independent.

How did the skills or knowledge learned from your Dual Credit course help you with what you do now?

Some aspects I learned in my Dual Credit course were again covered in a course I’m taking in my full-time program at Seneca. It’s good to have the knowledge ahead of time and it makes you feel more confident in what you are studying since you are already familiar with some of the material.

Is there anything else you think more people should know about Dual Credit or how it played a role in your educational journey?

It made me realize I wanted to go to college over university, it was more hands-on with smaller classes. It was less lecture and more actually doing something, which I really liked. I learn more through hands-on, so after doing the course I realized I could learn like this. It was similar to high school classes in ways, but better!

It was nice to have a Seneca ID. Just having the ID, I already felt like a college student and I could go use any of the resources that were there, like the adviser to help with resumés.
